Too many rats in the house? Call us on
Where there are people there will be rats !!
Rats are one of our most numerous pests, wherever there is a food source and people create food sources, there will be rats nearby waiting to take advantage. We have two main types of Rat in the country, The Brown Rat or Norway Rat, Rattus Norvegicus which is the most common and widespread and The Black Rat or Ship Rat, Rattus Rattus.
Most people will go through life nowadays without ever encountering the Black Rat, a fantastic climber with incredible agility. They are now fairly restricted to Dock yards on the coast and rarely if ever seen inland in this area. This was the rat of Victorian England but has since been moved out of town by the far more invasive Brown Rat.
Rattus Norvegicus is the most common rat we have now and as stated before, whereas most people will go through life without encountering the Black Rat, everyone on the planet will at some point encounter the Brown rat.
Much larger than the Black version they lack the agility of the former but make up for that with its intelligence and learning ability. Food source is the main reason you will find yourself with a Rat infestation, the most common these days being the very “green” compost heap everyone is encouraged to keep, with the emergence of fortnightly bin collections people started to put food waste in and on compost heaps and bins, this provided a terrific food source for this avid waste feeder and the population has boomed ever since. Other food sources include bird feeders, chicken and rabbit food etc. in fact anything that is digestible for them!! One of the more common jobs we do is Rats in sheds or garages that have found a box or bag of stored grass seed !!!
Professionally rats are relatively easy to treat in most circumstances if the food source can be removed during the treatment, even when it cannot we can still provide effective treatment, it just takes a couple of days longer to achieve 100% kill. (Tip, do not remove the food source until you engage the pest control company or you will have rats in places you did not have them before as they attempt to find food in other places)
Rats are destructive, often causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to stored products but more importantly they carry a number of different diseases including the often fatal (to humans and dogs) Leptospirosis or Wiels disease, a disease of the liver and lymphatic system that is extremely serious.
Rat treatments are carried out using the latest and strongest rodenticides available, considering safety and non-target species, please be aware that proprietary poisons bought over the counter can cause resistance problems in rats and can make later control by a professional pest controller much more difficult and prolonged.
